A True Story of Change: From a Prison Cell to a New Beginning
Have you ever found yourself thinking:
- “Why do I keep making the same mistakes?”
- “Why does everything always go wrong for me?
- “What am I really living for?”
Many people carry these questions quietly. We want to change—but somehow end up stuck in the same patterns, knowing something needs to shift but unsure how to begin.
At Happy Science, we regularly hear from people who are searching for meaning, healing, and a way forward. Today, we’d like to share a true story—a story of a woman who lost her way as a teenager and was sent to a juvenile detention center. Through her encounter with Happy Science, she found an opportunity to reflect deeply on her life, and ultimately turned her life around.
Readers have shared reflections such as:
“I realized that when I change, my circumstances change.”
“I discovered that it was my perspective was holding me back, and by changing it, I can change how I live.”
We hope you’ll read through to the end.
A True Story: “I Will Never Commit a Crime Again”
Nozomi grew up in a home where her parents fought often. From a young age, she felt that other families were warm and loving, while hers was not. She carried a deep sense of loneliness.
In middle school, she began seeking belonging elsewhere. Late nights. The wrong crowd. Smoking, theft, violence—choices she knew were wrong, yet felt unable to stop.
Inside, she kept telling herself:
“It’s not all my fault.”
“Life made me this way.”
Eventually, her actions led to serious consequences. She was sent to a juvenile detention center and placed alone, in a solitary cell.
Anger that had nowhere to go. Time with no escape.
She says that spending those days completely alone was far more painful than she could have imagined.
Her mother gives her a Happy Science Prayer Book
The only time she could speak with anyone was during her mother’s biweekly visits.
At first, Nozomi would snap at her mother during visits. But over time, she began to look forward to them.
Three months into her stay, she realized she wanted to have something to keep with her. She asked her mother. What her mother brought was “The True Words Spoken By Buddha,” a book of prayers from Happy Science.
At first, it sat untouched. But one day, out of boredom, she read it.
She finished it, then closed it. Then, something unexpected happened. The words lingered in her mind.
“There used to be the Light in the Great Universe. The Light is the Energy of Buddha…”
(Why am I repeating these words in my head?)
She found it strange, even to herself, yet the next morning, she decided to read it again.
A simple recitation changed the direction of her heart
In her solitary cell, Nozomi quietly read the text aloud.
That entire day, she felt something completely new, a feeling that was the opposite of everything she had felt before.
“I’ve been wrong.”
(Oh no… what am I supposed to do?)
She could hardly believe that a true sense of reflection was rising within her.
The Moment Her Heart Broke Open
On the third day of reading, after reading all the prayers, she felt as if something inside her had been cut away. A flood of remorse poured up from her heart, and she burst into tears.
“Ah… I was wrong…’
Up until then, she had been convinced that none of it was her fault. That mindset collapsed. For the first time, she truly understood that she had caused pain to her mother, her teachers, and the people she had hurt. She felt genuine remorse.
It was also clear to her what she needed to do next:
“I need to reflect, apologize, and start over.”
“I’m going to turn my life around and make everyone proud.”
“I wasn’t unloved,” “I just couldn’t see it.”
Nozomi wrote “Self-reflection” in her notebook and began listing the wrongs she had committed—stealing, assault, driving without a license…along with the state of mind she had been in at the time.
Gradually, things started to become clear to her: the loneliness she had carried, the reasons her anger had boiled over. And the fact that her mother had never given up on her.
“I wonder how mom must have felt…”
For the first time, as she imagined her mother’s perspective, her heart felt full, like water soaking into parched soil.
“It was me who had been seeing things wrong…”
At her next visit, when she saw her mother’s face, Nozomi couldn’t hold back her tears. She bowed her head and said:
“Mom, I’m sorry…”
Her mother cried too. The two of them wept together until the visit ended.
Self-Reflection Opened the Door to a New Life
From that moment on, Nozomi was a different person.
She threw herself fully into the center’s classes and assignments. Her 1-year sentence was shortened, and she was released after six months. Once home, she continued studying, offered repeated apologies, and told her friends that she was committed to living an honest life.
Today, Nozomi works with purpose, striving to contribute to society through her job.
She says,
“If that experience in solitary confinement hadn’t happened, I would have repeated the same mistakes forever.”
What changed her life was “The True Words Spoken by Buddha”
“The True Words Spoken By Buddha” is a prayer book that anyone can receive by becoming a Happy Science student member. (The full set of sutras is available to those who join as a devotee.)
Many people who started reciting this prayer report similar experiences:
A man in his 30’s who couldn’t work because of depression, and felt that life was punishment
--He discovered his purpose, and found his calling
A woman in her 40s, burdened for years by resentment toward her mother
--She came to understand the meaning of her life and was able to feel genuine gratitude
A couple devastated by the loss of a child
--They experienced a complete shift in how they viewed life and found hope again
